Lubrication: Chaffing is usually friction.  Lubrication is usually the answer.  Stay well hydrated.  Hydrate your skin and lock in the moisture with a good lotion.  Petrolatum based lotions and creams are good for this.  If you have chaffing between the thighs or elsewhere  where skin rubs, use vaseline or similar product to ease the friction.

Appearance: Tinea cruris / jock itch has a fairly sharp border. Chafing is multiple small lesions. Jock itch is easily managed with topical tolnaftate and prevented by good hygiene, including staying dry and not re-using towels.
