: Nonsurgical methods of treating vocal cord nodules include resting of the voice and voice therapy by a speech therapist. I'm not sure how successful these methods are in comparison to surgical treatment however. An ENT specialist could answer this question best.

Depends: Voice abuse is the most common cause of a vocal fold nodule.  It is a thickening of the lining epithelium and usually requires voice therapy.  However, modified voice rest can result in recovery of this thickening in a matter of weeks to months.  You need to see your layrngologist for advice or a voice therapist for therapy.

It can be: Sometimes healing can lead to swelling and in some cases a temporary polyp called a granuloma. Contact your surgeon and let him/her know. They may want you to come in to take a look.

A diagnosis is necessary by an ENT doctor.

Hoarseness: Vocal fold (chord) dysfunction is a non=specific term that simply means your true vocal folds are not vibrating or moving in a normal fashion resulting in hoarseness or a rough quality to the voice.  
Depending on the duration of this disorder or if you are a smoker, you need to see a laryngologist (ent doctor) to make a more specific diagnosis and render treatment.

Vocal cord dysfuncti: Many things, this generally refers to vocal cords that close instead of open on inspiration. Reflux, sinus infections, allergy and other conditions have all been implicated. There does not appear to be one cause.

Overuse: Cancer is an uncommon cause of lesions on the vocal cords.  The most common is growth of polyps which are like callouses and comes from over use, serious singing and chronic infection.
