what types of stretches/exercises are good for relieving sciatica caused by a mild lower back muscle strain?

Easy stretch: This could be the sciatic nerve being compressed by the piriformis muscle.  Place the ankle on the side where pain is [let's say the right] atop the opposite [left] knee.  Sit upright and pull the [right] knee up until you feel a stretch in the [right] buttock.  Hold the stretch for 10 or 15 seconds.  Rest for 30 seconds, and repeat 3 times.  Do this 3 times a day.  See doc if no relief in 3 days.

See below: In general no bed rest unless pain is really severe.  It is best to lay on whatever is most comfortable.  Get up and do as much as you can.  General rule of thumb is that if it hurts a little it is ok, but do not go to extremes and use good body mechanics.  Try to keep one foot on a stool or rest. Do not stay in one position too long. If it really hurts don't do it. Time cures this.

Back pain: Pain for longer than 6-8 wks despite appropriate conservative treatment including pt should be further evaluated with xray & possible mri.

Low back pain: There are a number of things we don't recommend, one of which is imaging (xrays, CT scans, MRIs etc) for back pain in 1st 6wks unless have red flag symptoms/signs. Avoid aggravating activities but no bed rest!

If the pain persists: Another 2 to 4 weeks, then it is more than a muscular strain but most issues that are back related, including disc problems are self-limiting but may take longer with less than 15% being chronic problems.
