Swelling : Swelling in the legs can be caused by several different things.  If one leg becomes swollen suddenly, a blood clot must be considered.  It sounds like your swelling is in both legs so that is less likely.  Some medications can cause swelling in the legs, so ask your doctor to review your medications for side effects.  If your circulatory system is having a problem, it can result in leg swelling, so it is important that your heart be evaluted.  Some patients who don't get enough protein in their diet can get leg swelling, a blood test can diagnose this.  If patients have kidney or liver disease they can get leg swelling; this is determined by blood testing also.  It sounds like you are having significant pain and persistent swelling so please have this swelling re-evaluated medically.

Edema CHF?: The reason you are both having edema is in part related to eating more sodium(Na) than your kidneys can get rid of. There are many causes and you need to find out as treatment will differ widely.  I recommend USING the app Cronometer to track Na intake to see where the Na is coming from. Your daily goal should be &lt;1,500 mg Na.  Discuss results with your team.  Keep them and us posted.

Time: If you're certain that this is a bite and not an infection, then a topical (or oral) steroid and a non-sedating antihistamine may help relieve your symptoms,  Only time will "get rid of it."  It's important that you find out how this happened to prevent a recurrence.  If you have any doubt that it's a bite, you should see a doctor.

Depends on cause of: The swelling:
1: blood clot, once diagnosed can be treated with clot busters, 
2: rupture of a cyst behind the knee, is treated with pain meds, etc.
3: if swelling is due to a bony lesion, its removal can be done;
4: soft tissue swelling, from a tumor, infection, fluid collection(incl. Blood) will need to be removed or drained.
Ask your pcp for the specific symptoms that you have, and he'll help.
