Time. : Unfortunately not a whole lot. You can try home remedies , Gargling salt water, teas etc. ibuprofen might help with the pain and inflammation but you need time for your body to fight off the virus. Your voice will come back in a few days.

Sx relief only.: Hydrate well.  Consider using a warm air vaporizer. Mix several teaspoons of honey into herbal tea  w a squeeze of lemon juice.  Or make tea with 2 tsp of marshmallow root bark per 1cup of hot water (steep in a covered pot for at least 5 minutes).  Drink several times a day or as needed to relieve coughing. Voice rest.  See a dr if your cough is not resolving, difficulty breathing or temp &gt; 104.

Voice rest: If u have a profession that entails u to talk a lot then that can cause it n voice rest is best treatment. Chronic post nasal drip, acid reflux/ heart burn, nodule on vocal cord r other possibilities. I would suggest u to see ur doc.

Hoarse: First go see an ENT for exam. No smoking, no alcohol, stop clearing throat, drink a lot of clear fluids, voice rest, no yelling

Accepted Answer

Sit up during sleep: Elevate your head to prevent worsening reflux if this is contributing to your hoarse voice.  Voice rest is helpful, gargling with warm water, decongestants and antireflux medication (prevacid, prilosec, nexium, (esomeprazole) etc) will also help. Stay hydrated and avoid coughing which can strain the vocal cords. Use cough medication if necessary.  See your doctor to rule out strep or contagious infections.

The nose knows: The most likely cause of transient vocal raspiness in the morning is due to collection of fluid in the back of the larynx (voice box) which in tern is often due to allergy.  Another cause is esophageal reflux with the fluid getting into the throat.  Antihistamines will help the former cause.  Antacids will help the latter cause.

Depends on cause: Voice quality can be genetic, but structural causes can be addressed with ENT evaluation and/or lifestyle changes.  Smoking, acid reflux, chronic cough, polyps, vocal cord paralysis and many other ailments can cause vocal cord irritation and voice changes.

Viruses: Viral infections cause the majority of laryngitis. Resting your voice is good but not always possible. Avoiding very hot/cold liquids and hard food may help alleviate some discomfort. I find that inhailing tepid mist from a humidifier mixed with eucalyptus oil helps me treat it. Eucalyptus oil sooths the inflamed mucosa, whereas mist helps relieve the dryness and tearing pain caused by inflammatio.

Cause?: This would depend on the cause.  Cigarette smoker?  Reflux? Voice abuse? Other causes for vocal cord nodules? Please discuss with your doctor.  You may need to be evaluated for your voice changes if they're recent and since chronic.
