i am drinking more water in order to get rid of excess fluid in my legs and feet, but it seems like my body is hoarding it all, i have a desk job, so propping my feet up is not an option....what else can i do?

Doctor can examine: A long discussion with one's primary care doctor is needed, because there are several possible causes for leg edema (some are serious, some are not). To say, "I am drinking more... to get rid of excess fluid" is like saying, "I am eating more brisket in order to get rid of excess fat in my abdomen." An in-person evaluation and long talk with one's doctor is needed.

Fluid retention: Need more information.  You have to know the cause of fluid retention. Is it liver, kidney, thyroid or heart? Fluid in leg, abdomen or allover?Usually in all cases the water pills or injections are given. You had ercp, biopsy &lap. Surgery. What is biopsy report and what was surgery for? Have fluid restriction. Please discuss with your doctor who knows your history well. Thanks.

Not usually: in some instances, antihistamines and inhibit bladder emptying with back up of urine and kidney dysfunction. This can be serious, but it is rare and generally only occurs in susceptible individuals.  Otherwise, antihistamines generally don't cause fluid retention.  If steroids have been used, they can cause it.  Benadryl can also worsen cardiac or thyroid disease with an effect on fluid retention.

Some PMS options: Consider hormone meds, OTC meds containing diuretics &amp;  exercise.  Avoid caffeine, chocolate, alcohol &amp; salt. Consider omega- 3 fatty acids, or Black Cohosh.

NO: Never a good idea to use a systemic drug for a local problem. You will dehydrate all your vital tissues and organs. You can damage your kidneys and cause abnormally now blood pressure.  Fluid retention is a normal part of the menstrual cycle and resolves on its own. If you are overweight, that's another possible cause and should not be diuresed.

Yes but,: Water pills only do so much. The patient does the most important job; salt and fluid restriction. Beware of salt in processed food and in bread (recent data). If you don't, at least do not mix them! i don't care how much water pills you take, you can sabotage their effect with your intake. If you control fluids and salt you may find yourself not in need for water pills.

Change pills: This is usually due to too strong a pill, talk to your doctor about changing the ratio of hormones in the pills.

Several causes...: Your fluid retention may be from the intravenous fluids you received during your operation and recovery.  You may also be (relatively) , malnourished, with decreased protein stores which can also cause swelling.  Follow up with your surgeon.  Good luck, feel better.
