Iriritation: Stringy  mucus is due to irritation causing dryness. Treatment includes initially artificial tear ( more viscous type like systane ultra),  then have eyes evaluated to see if other agents/ treament will help. This includes the omegas by mouth or preservative lubricating drops and /or restasis.

Allergies or blepharitis: Allergies cause mucous & tearing. Over-the-counter allergy medicine & eyedrops help relieve it. Zaditor (ketotifen) is a good eyedrop. Blepharitis also causes this.  It's a minor infection of the eyelids. Crusting & tearing is common. Warm compress with daily baby shampoo washing of the eyelids helps relieve this. Severe cases are placed on antibiotics by your doctor.

Allergies : Allergies cause itching & tearing. Over-the-counter allergy medicine & eyedrops help relieve it. Zaditor (ketotifen) is a good eyedrop. Blepharitis also causes itching & this can you can try loraditine (claritin) or other previous prescription anti-allergy meds.  Check with your doctor if you have any medical conditions or are pregnant.

Watery eyes: Sounds like you have a viral illness.  Take an over-the-counter decongestant and see if this helps.  A saline nasal spray is also helpful.  Drink plenty of fluids and get some rest.  If you are still having problems after 7 days, call your primary doctor.

Steroid inhaler: An antibiotic might be appropriate if one has a yellow or green nasal discharge, especially if associated with painful sinuses and/or fever.  If the discharge is clear, sinuses are pain-free, and there is no fever, a more appropriate medication might be an inhaled steroid such as Flonase (1-2 inhalations every 12 hours for7-10 days).  If symptoms persist, see your md or an ear, nose and throat doc.

Blow your nose: A good assist when you feel a cold coming on is to take one or two (4 mg) over the counter chlorpheneramine pills (side effect: sleepiness).  This can attenuate the mucus.  Phenylephrine (side effect: heart rate increase, dizziness) is present in many anti-mucus over the counter remedies and helps in the actual production phase. Keep well hydrated and blow your nose gently (sniffing can help).

Nasal suction : This can be tricky as they are notoriously bad at properly blowing. If they will allow you to use nasal saline spray followed by a bulb suction this will help. If the mucous is caused by allergies the better thing is to address the underlying cause and prevent the mucous.

Mucinex (guaifenesin): If you have a simple cold and are coughing up mucus, it is best to take medicines that make the mucus more watery and easier for you to cough up.  Cough suppressants will simply stop you from coughing, but leave all the mucus sitting in your chest. If the symptoms do not go away or worsen, or if you have a high fever, you may need to see your doctor for antibiotics.
