Also have a thorough examination, as the pain may be due to the presence of periodontal disease.

No: If you are doing it properly, flossing will not separate your teeth. Properly means to just place the floss between your teeth and move the floss up and down lightly on the tooth in front and the tooth behind (don't forget to do the back surface of the last tooth). Do not go side to side. That motion could cut your gums.

Earlier is better: When babies get their 16 teeth its a good time to attempt to genly floss their teeth. Most toddlers won't sit still but i would encourage you to make the attempt daily ( without fighting) as this will teach her an important habit which we do daily. Be persistent!

Age of flossing: I would suggest use of a waterpik and good brushing is even more effective than the use of floss and brushing.  Either was, when the dentition is complete (not well related to age), that would be a good time.
