Kind of: While treatment for allergy with meds and sprays may help alleviate congestion, significant deviation of the septum can only be fixed with surgery.

Do you have packing?: You need to be on antibiotic if there is packing in your nose/ also need to take it lightly, stay propped up. 
afrin if bleeding twice daily for 2-3 days.
Change dripping pad as needed.
Watch for complications that were mentioned to you by your doctor, if any , then call him/her
excess bleeding-- ED

Properly diagnosed: It is usually effective if recommend for the correct reasons. The surgery also needs to be executed properly.

Probably not : This is not likely to reduce frequency of colds but may help to improve obstructive symptoms.

what can i expect when having surgery for a deviated septum?

Postop Septoplasty: After surgery for deviated septum, expect some moderate soreness and discomfort in the nose with some blood tinged mucous drainage.  You may have packing in place blocking your nasal breathing, or you may not and still have blockage due to swelling.  Either way, most of my patients are more irritated with the nasal blockage than pain.  After a week, things start to improve over the next month.

Maybe: A minimally deviated septum will probably cause no problems. A badly deviated septum can cause difficulty breathing through the nose, and may lead to snoring and sleep problems.

Medication: try combination medical treatment with antihistamine, and nasal steroid
use nasal strips as well 
and if all these and no benefit --surgery

Be careful: I've seen the websites dealing with "neurocranial restructuring". They are testimonial-driven, claim to relieve everything from having ptsd to ALS to alzheimer's (!) to being ugly, and are short on peer-reviewed articles. I think most healthtap physicians will want more before we feel comfortable sending people for this treatment. Most folks with deviated septum don't require rx in any case.

Deviated septum: This really depends on how bad it is. Also depends on the skill of the surgeon. When I did the anesthesia for these we would take about 40-90 min.
