Sit ups/exercise,,: Things like sit ups would be very helpful for strengthening your abdominal muscles and likely for your lower back as well.  Overall exercise is also very important as it strengthens all your muscles  and takes off extra weight.

No: Not likely that these exercises, which are excellent, would cause arthritis. A study of older runners who ran an average of 26 miles/week actually showed that they had 25% less musculoskeletal complaints than non-runners of same age!

Slow down : You may want to slow down on the activities.  Consider stretching and warming up before the exercises.  If you doubt additional symptoms of numbness, weakness or difficulty with urine or bowels you need to be evaluated by a physician.

Really shouldn't: Understand that lhermitte's sign is a shock-like sensation that radiates to arms and legs during a flexion or forced flexion maneuver of the neck. Classically, this was used to identify ms. It is presently used to commonly identify symptomatic spinal cord compression. So, if you are not having the arm/leg symptoms, this is not lhermitte's sign. If yes, you should consider evaluation by spine md.

Hard to say: Without knowing more about yourself.  The best thing for your back, is to first make sure your weight is optimized.  If you are overweight that places undue stress on your back.  Then, exercise wise, consider exercises that strengthen your core, as a healthy back requires balanced muscular responses from your back and abdominal muscles.

Safe use: Prudent no. Actually low back exercises are rarely necessary- its a strong muscle to begin with, but any such exercises should be done with legs together and with no weight to minimize impact.  Work your abs by standing back against the wall and feet our 4 inches, push your low back into wall with your abs and hold.

Walking: The best exercise for chronic low back pain is low impact daily exercise such as walking.  Core strengthening is also a very important part of your workout routine.

If done properly: If you have a strong core, either from prior to the herniation or that has been developed afterwards, you should be able to do those two exercises. In a push up, which actually works your core, you keep your back perfectly straight if done properly. The same is true of a pull up which should utilize upper body strenght but keep low back straight. Confirm your form is correct prior to starting.

Yes but: If your symptoms are severe then i wouldn't push it, but if you are improving or your symptoms are mild, then it would be ok to do chin ups and push ups, as long as you are not pushing yourself too hard or straining.  Keep in mind that there is always a chance the herniated disc could get worse, but at some point you have to begin resuming normal activities.
