Do not know: Barrett's esophagus results from reflux of gastric acid and enzymes backing up into the esophagus and damaging the lining of the esophagus.  Overtime the damage can result in cancer. There are changes in the mucosa, ulceration, bleeding, scarring and overtime may develop cancer.  Symptoms are heart burn and swallowing difficulty.  Treatment is with antacids and may be surgery depending on the cause and extent of damage.

Is there dysplasia?: The key issue with barrett's is whether there is any dysplasia . Dysplasia is an abnormality of the cells of the esophagus that have a distinct microscopic appearance.  High-grade dysplasia (hgd) requires rx (surgical or endoscopic); low-grade dysplasia (lgd) warrants very close surveillance.  Ironically, anti-reflux surgery has not led to a regression in barrett's changes as one would think.

Not really.: Currently, there is no intervention that has been shown to prevent the development of barrett esophagus or its progression to esophageal cancer.  Probably, the best remedy is to stop the reflux esophagitis through diet modification, like less spicy foods, less acidic foods like less tomato/tomato sauce, less orange juice, less chocolate.  Endoscopic screening and follow-up may be done.

Reflux disease (GERD) is a risk factor for the condition. Between 5 and 10 percent of people with GERD develop Barrett’s esophagus. IT diagnosed with an upper GI endoscopy. Conversion to Ca is about 5%/yr.
