should i play pond hockey without a hockey helmet?  does it matter whether i have boots or skates on?

Accepted Answer

Helmet recommended: Wearing a helmet may help in preventing some injuries to the head. It will not completely prevent concussions, but it may help in decreasing the impact from a stick or fall. Depending on how aggressive you play it probably doesn't matter boots or skates. Of course you have to be careful of thin ice.

i broke the side of my foot.  i'm in a boot bit it had my foot at a 90angle. it's stressing me calves. can i adjust the angle of the boot?

Possibly: Talk to your doctor. If it's an adjustable boot it should he ok to have a little angle to it. If it's not adjustable then sometimes there are some special wedges that can be placed.

if i skated with my broken foot about 4 weeks after i broke it, and i had my boot on should it be ok.( i wasnt trying and was only pushing on the board?

: Take it easy. Fractures usually take longer to heal than a month. You can do without the board until your physician gives you the green light.

i have a leg ulcer that is approximately 1" x 1/2" in size. i have been using unna boots with no success. will solcoseryl help heal the ulcer?

Leg wound: You need to see a physician (p)to see if your non-healing leg wound is due to either a varicose vein under it, peripheral artery disease (pad) or an osteomyelitis (o). If you have a venous stasis ulcer, a venous doppler study of your leg veins may diagnose a varicose vein beneath it. If there is one, a vein ablation can help cure the wound. If your veins are normal, consider pad or an o. See a p.

toenails have been white for years. tested for terry's/lindsay nail; all blood work normal.  non-diabetic. heart test normal. skated for 15 yrs when younger. had skate boots on for up to 40 hrs per week.  could this just be normal for me?

Yes: White toenails present for years are usually unremarkable

If your not putting: Pressure on the foot then your body is not aligned properly and you end up exerting more energy and utilizing other body parts etc....

Check with your Doc-: Who had ordered them as he must be having way of dealing with your specific problem.
He has known you, examined and will knowing the effects of the treatment.
Anyone else would most likely cause a  confusion for you.

Hard to say: All depends on your goal and determining factors for what is "good". Skating is an excellent exercise and helps develop and maintain muscles, flexibility, cardiovascular health, coordination, joints, etc.I would think they are quite comparable, though I haven't seen studies on skating. I suspect skating might deliver less impact than running.Also, depends on how hard,long, and athletic your skate.

3 tips: There are many things that you can do but let me give you three tips. First make sure that you are well conditioned before doing any serious skating. The strength and endurance needed in your quads and is immense. Second make sure you warm up adequately before going out on the ice and lastly make sure that your skates are proper for your weight and ability level.

None early on: A fibulae tip fx @ ankle is a sign of ligament avulsion from an inversion injury. Give it 6-8 wks 2 heal and rehab according 2 ur ortho guy. Bone2 bone healing is the best outcome.  Follow ur ortho's protocol
