: If you have had oral herpes a long time (more than a new months), you needn't worry. People are immune to new infections with the HSV type they already have, and therefore almost transfer their longstanding infections to new body areas. People with oral herpes never infect their own genitals. Nothing to worry about!

recently had sex with girl. sore showed up on tip of tongue that i thought was a canker sore. there are white sores on throat and tonsils. tonsils and throat are swollen. nothing on genitalia though. is this more likely straight herpes or tonsillitis?

Maybe strep,flu,etc.: Tongue and throat symptoms can be from viruses, strep throat, allergies, etc... It can be difficult to tell what the cause is. If symptoms only last 1-2 days, it was likely allergies, irritation, or a mild cold. Doctors have rapid 5-minute tests for strep, so a primary care doctor can diagnose strep and start antibiotics. Other possible viral infections are mono and oral herpes. Doctor can check.

No: Canker sores are shallow defects in the mucous membranes inside the mouth that have no connection to the herpes virus."cold sores" outside the mouth, often locaated just beyond the red tissue of the lip, are due to the herpes simplex virus, commonly type 1, but this virus can also cause genital herpes.

Viral spread: The ulcer/sore contain a fluid that has the virus in it. If anyone comes in contact with the fluid, they can contract the virus. Additionally the fluid touching other areas of your skin can cause local spreading.  Remember though, the time that the virus is most readily spread is just before he ulcers appear and you may only feel tingling or nothing at all.

It does not migrate to other parts of the body. It cannot become a different virus.  Herpes type two, which is most commonly found on the genitals is found in 25% of americans.

Technically..: Yes, you could if the sore was open and shedding the virus, and you touched the sore on your mouth and then right after touched your genitals.Although this is more of a technicality,studies show that it is becoming more common than it used to be in the last decade.I would generally avoid immediate genital contact after touching an open cold sore as a rule to be safest.

Herpes Simplex virus: Cold sores (mouth) are usuaully from herpes simplex type i and genital lesions are usually herpes simplex type 2 (but this is not always the case). Both lesions are caused by herpes simplex viruses.
