Shingles: Shingles is chicken pox in a nerve. Rarely it appears at the same time as acute chicken pox. Most often it is an older person who had the virus as a child and carried it as a dormant virus for many yrs. It may occur in a normal 14 yr-old but the diagnosis may be an error. In the absence of some predisposing condition causing defective immunity it is not serious. Meds control it.

Herpes Zoster: That would be most unusual , as shingles (herpes zoster) is the localized re-eruption of the chickenpox virus (varicella). Most infants have trans-placental anti-varicella antibody that protects them from chickenpox until at least 6 months of age. The antibody levels decline gradually to non-protective levels by 1 year which is why the first varicella vaccine is usually given at 1 yr of age.

See ID: See an infectious disease doctor. I'll check an HIV test, titers for mycoplasma, valley fever (if in southwest), legionella and other test. Id doctor are the best for this. Also conside pulmonologist visit.

Unusual: My understanding is that Shingles usually affects one dermatome or adjacent dermatomes . Let your doctor know.

my 94 year old father came down with shingles. its been 5 weeks and hes still hurting from it. hes been on medication for it. hes also little shaky feeling but not sure if its related. hes going back to doc. can shingles last that long?

: yes, the pain that can be very severe, can mast for a while, esp in older pts. Eventually it should abate. There are some topical and oral meds that hid physician might prescribe. Als, very rarely, shingles might be associated with other health issues. This might be investigated by his doc as well, esp if the condition should worsen.

Yes: There is a medicine that helps treat shingles (more than one, actually), but it is only effective if started within the first few days of the rash.
