Don't bet on it: Enemas can relieve an outlet blocked by firm or large stools, but the reason they got that way may be a problem. Kids often retain stools because at some point it started hurting to go, so they decided they would avoid it. They can actually cause a ballooning of their colon that makes emptying less efficient. Some kids need a bowel rehab designed by a well trained pedi or pedi gastroenterologist.

: I get a lot of information from a simple abdominal flat plate. I can often identify the ballooning of the large bowel with this film. A gastrographin lower GI study can verify the flat plate and also provide a good initial clean out to the retained stool that is part of the problem. I hope you are working with a pedi or pedi GI experienced in this problem. It can take a year to fix when done right

Try oral laxatives : Have you tried laxatives already? Miralax (polyethylene glycol) otc should work well. Enema is unpleasant and is used as last resort. You should also talk to your local doctor on how to regulate your bowel if you are chronically constipated. Taking food rich in fibers or fibers supplement would help.

Constipation: If you are only mildly constipated you might try using a glycerin suppository instead on an enema.

Yes  you could: Pregnancy is not a contraindication to use enema. However, I suggest you try again Senna in any presentation and increase you fiber (fruits and vegetablels) and water intake. Take care!

Magnesium citrate: You have correctly tried transrectal route for relief of your constipation.  It is also helpful to treat from above with oral laxatives.  One bottle of overt the counter magnesium citrate should work.  If not you may need to seek medical care/advice.

Get labs: Has the thyroid gland been checked? If the daughter has underactive thyroid gland the metabolism is slow. More likely to get constipated.

You listed the condition of diarrhea. That is the opposite of constipation. Was this due to laxative use?

Her bowel function needs to be stabilized.
