Inherited: Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a genetic predisposition. If a correct diagnosis has been made it is for lifetime. On the brighter side many symptoms and quality-of-life issues related to pcos can (often) be improved with home interventions such as weight-loss, and with medication. The drug metformin can help for some women with PCOS, but needs a doctor's eval and prescription. Good wishes.

Forever?: If you lose a lot of weight the metformin may no longer play a role, but there's not a lot of downside to long-term use of this medication, and if it helps you regulate your cycle, avoid diabetes, lose weight then that will have positive consequences.

Regular periods?: One of the hallmarks of pcos is irregular periods.  In a normal period, the uterine lining builds up and then sheds in a concerted cycle. In pcos, the lining can accumulate when your period is long overdue, it can then drift out at random times, causing abnormal bleeding. If you aren't on birth control pills to prevent this type of bleeding, you may want to discuss it with your gyn doc.

PCOS and pregnancy: See an endocrinologist to help you, specifically someone who focuses in fertility. A diabetes medication called metformin has been known to improve PCOS patients' fertility. But this requires a prescription, and close monitoring, so it isn't for everyone. See an endocrinologist to ask if it's an option for you.

No cure: There is no cure for pcos. There is a spectrum of pcos symptoms and not all women have the same severity. This makes it difficult to find one treatment for all. Therefore, goal is to manage symptoms. Women with pcos do have more difficulty conceiving and may need to see a specialist.

i was told that i have polycystic ovaries today and i take 500 mg metformin for prediabetes. can i still get pregnant?

Prediabetes: I never understand "prediabetes". Either you have diabetes or you do not. Always make sure that you are not taking too much food and/or not exercising enough. I doubt you need metformin and there is no apparent reason to think you will not have a pregnancy and thoroughly enjoy your children.

Occasionally: Most women with pcos do not ovulate regularly.  Weight loss can help some women and there are medications that will induce ovulation in most women with pcos.  See your ob/gyn for evaluation and management. Good luck.

Depends: If you are having sex, do not go off the pill, unless you wish to get pregnant.

Common: The most common treatment is birth control pills.  The pill will suppress the ovaries, regulate your cycle, decrease blood loss, and if cramps are a problem with your periods - that will probably improve also.
