1500-2000 mg/day: At least 1500 mg of calcium per day from foods rich in calcium and supplements.  It is also very important to ensure vitamin d levels are kept normal.  This will usually require a vitamin d supplements, because steroids cause the body to use up vitamin d much faster than usual.

i eat 2 meals a day. i take asa 81mg and potassium cl er 20meq at am meal, and prednisone 10mg at evening meal. i need to add a multi-vitamin, which is a,b's,c,d,e and calcium. i take all these with food. when can i take the vitamin? thank you?

Calcium-prednisone: To prevent osteoporosis from chronic prenisone therapy, more than calcium is required.  A healthy diet, plus supplements of vitamin d3, good sources of calcium from diet and supplements, magnesium, zinc, boron and strontium all help.  Active weight bearing exercise is important.

Take separately: Do have some food in your stomach when taking prednisone, as it can be irritating to the gut lining. Take calcium separately for better absorption of the calcium.

Possibly: TUMs (calcium carbonate) may affect the absorption of other medications. Also if they have calcium in them you do not want to go above 1,500 mg of calcium a day because of the risk of kidney stones. Also you said you have OA and we typically do not use Prednisone for that condition.  Please make certain of your diagnosis

No reported problems: But.... ALWAYS make it a practice to advise ALL of the health professionals you see of ALL the medications you take in detail.Include OTC too. It's just a smart thing to do .Then, if a problem arises, knowledge is availabe. It's probably ok, but make sure. I hope you do well!

i have lupus, after a biopsy found out i have lichenoid dermatitis.  i take 20 mg of prednisone a day but it doesn't seem to be helping. help.?

See your doctor: You should discuss your concerns with your doctor.  Lupus is a serious disease and treatment can be complicated.  That being said, your doctor may increase the prednisone.
