i have anemia and gastritis. my b12 level is normal. could the gastritis alone cause anemia related to blood loss? thank you.

Need more eval: Gastritis means inflammation on the stomach lining. It does not cause anemia- unless if it is not just gastritis but also you have bleeding on the stomach lining or if the gastritis is affecting absorption of certain nutrient like iron for instance. There are many things that can cause anemia besides iron, vit B12 def or bleeding. You definitely should have further evaluation to find the cause.

Eating ice: Anemia associated with iron deficiency often cause a tendency to eating ice, not exactly thirst, but a behavior called pica.

More info is needed: The reason for the excess bleeding needs to be established and appropriate treatment needs to be started.  Specific questions would be for a mild bleeding disorder, as von willebrand disease, or mild coagulation factor deficiency.  Regardless of the cause, iron replacement therapy needs to be considered.  Please see your physician.  Is there a family history of bleeding disorder?

Not necessarily: If your anemia has been determined to be caused by blood loss, there is probably no need to see a hematologist.  If the anemia persists despite iron treatment (and preventing further blood loss), then a hematologist consultation might be indicated.

In Traditional: Chinese Medicine - it is recommended that green tea not be consumed during menses. It might be a contributing factor - but I would very much doubt that it is a singular cause for your amount of blood loss.  Take care.

Anemia: If you have heavy menses, they can cause severe iron deficient anemia. Alternative causes should be considered if this not the case; specifically a gastrointestinal source for the bleeding/ versus iron absorption issues. Iron replacement and tight follow up will be recommended.

Transfusion/infusion: Blood ( pack red blood cells) transfusion is usually given in the setting of significant anemia due to blood loss. Intravenous iron infusion is given  to treat iron deficiency anemia. However both blood transfusion and iron infusion can be given in anemia due to blood loss and iron deficiency anemia- decision will depend on how severe the anemia/symptoms & how quickly you want to treat the anemia.
