Need full evaluation: You need to see an allergist or dermatologist to determine the cause. If idiopathic-i.e. Cause unknown, you may need to take medication on a continuous basis till the process 'burns itself out". I cannot give you a  time frame.

Need to see Doc: Since you have been on oral steroids for a very long time, any decrease in dosage has to be done very cautiously because of withdrawal symptoms including shock. Therefore, you need to see your doc for controlled and cautious monitoring of your health when the dosage is being decreased over a period of time.

Chronic Urticaria: Urticaria is not a disease but a cutaneous reaction pattern and can have many different causes. One of the many causes can be a form of autoimmune Progesterone dermatitis, which would be related to hormones.

Perhaps: Unfortunately, sometimes hives last for decades.  The usual medications like antihistamines (h1 and h2) are first line.  Some patients can have improvement with montelukast and recently the medication Omalizumab injection was shown to help with hives. (it's approved for asthma currently). An allergist can review the list of treatments and find one that may help.  It's frustrating--hang in there!

Chronic urticaria: 47 yo female with hives for 17 years. Chronic hives is a common condition that allergists/immunologists see in clinic on a regular basis. Most times, there is no environmental factor causing the hives. It is rare that patients with chronic hives have an underlying disorder like a thyroid problem, chronic infection, etc. Daily oral antihistamines can help. Please see an allergist for further recs

My opinion only: TAPER ...when possible with ANY medication  is the preferable way to stop without a REBOUND (return)of the symptomatology !

Chronic Urticaria: Studies show avoidance of stressors, alcohol, NSAIDs and your allergy trigger can all decrease chronic urticaria. Studies show levocetirizine is first line drug. Add hydroxyzine at night to sleep. See a Rheumatology expert to identify your allergy trigger with panel test if possible. You should get a NE Allergy panel. Studies show urticarial vasculitis and other DDx need to be considered.Good luck

after pregnancy i developed hives which lasted for 4 years until i fell pregnant again , then again after birth they have come back is this common?

Happens: Chronic urticaria is a great mystery and ongoing research into is pathophysiology still has not elucidated all the answers. It may be a certain hormonal balance that influences your urticaria. Treatment is the same no matter what, a daily antihistamine. If you are pregnant or breasfeeding, zyrtec or Claritin (loratadine) are good choices.
