But unless you have a professional there during labor and delivery, and afterwards, you risk a dangerous result for both you and your baby. Talk to your OB-GYN and see what is possible in your case for safe settings for delivery in your area, a birthing center may be available.

5-1-1 or 5-1-2: In general, contractions will come and go and may not be labor.  Only when they are regular, every 4-5 min apart or sooner, and when that lasts more than 1-2 hours is it usually labor.  If your bag of water breaks, call your doctor and plan to head to hospital.  "the rule:  5 min apart, lasting 1 minute, continuing for more than 1-2 hours."  always make sure your baby is moving well.

Some midwives push the "you control everything" idea & set it up like a cocktail party. Sad that the kid gets no vote in the matter. They think they can go to the hospital if things go bad, not realizing that the delay may put junior in a grave or a wheelchair.
