There are many.: Alzheimer's dementia is the most common type of irreversible dementia.  Others include multi-infarct or vascular dementia, lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementias, huntington's disease, creutzfeld-jakob disease. Approximately 1 percent of dementia cases are reversible. They include operable brain tumors, vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid disease, alcoholism or depression.

Use your mind/body: At all stages of dementia strengthening brain connections (called synapses) is the goal.  We do not have proven therapies in humans with dementia that can do this. However, any type of physical or mental exercize will help you feel better at any stage of dementia.
Aroma therapy, pet therapy, music therapy are but a few modalities I recommend.
Contact with 'happy people' and engage them.

See below: It affects the frontal lobes (front) and temporal lobes (sides) of the brain. Onset is usually earlier than alzheimer's. Initial sx may involve changes in personality, judgement and social functioning.  Pick's disease is one of the forms of the frontotemporal  dementia. Allele, not a mutant: It's not well understood, but often appears in those w/ Parkinson's, so a link with the PARK11 gene has been studied. Like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, most cases since not all end up w/ it LBD is not thought to be strongly inheredited. Yet LBD risk is heightened w/ inheritance of an allele. Pseudo dementia : Drugs do not cause alzheimer's, but numerous medicines can make it far worse due to anti-cholinergic side effects, and many elderly pts can seem to be demented due to drug effects, which reverse when med is modified.

how is  vascular dementia different than other types of dementia?

Accepted Answer

Vascular dementia: Vascular dementia may overlap with other types of dementia such as alzheimer's, but results from damage to, or blockages in, blood vessels that nourish the brain.  This leads to tiny "infarcts" or deaths of nerve cells in the brain.   People with hypertension and/or arteriosclerotic narrowing of these blood vessels are vulnerable to such changes, which happen in a stair-step process over time.

Yes: Alzheimer's disease or alzheimer's dementia is the most common type of dementia. Roughly 7 out 10 who have dementia have alzheimers. Other common types are are vascular, frontal temporal lobe, lewy body, alcohol or other substance induced types. There are many many rare causes of dementia.

No: Cortical dementia is many types. Degenerative dementia is the most common type. Vascular dementia is in about 15% of all dementia and ranks after degenrative dementia. It is called multi-infacrt dementia. It is the product not taking care of lowering high blood pressure over the years. It is not reversible  dementia. Only reversible dementia is vitamin b12and Folic Acid defiency dementia.
