Not true: Spicy food does not affect your baby's hair.  Foods to avoid during pregnancy are seafood high in mercury, undercooked meat poultry and eggs, unpasteurized milk, unwashed fruits and vegetables and alcohol.

Not really.: Prenatal pills are just multi-vitamins. While most of them contain iron, which is known to help hair growth, and some contain biotin (one of the b vitamins), which is also good for hair, they are not present in high enough dosages. You are better off just taking the iron and biotin - or better yet, let a dermatologist try to find out what is causing your hair loss in the first place.

Probably not: These vitamins appear to have a high level of biotin, or vitamin B7. High doses of biotin can be dangerous to the baby, so additional supplementation of biotin isn’t recommended. You should take your prenatal vitamin, which will have biotin, but will also have the things your developing fetus needs such as folic acid and other vitamins. Most women see hair &amp; nail growth w/ prenatal vitamins, too.

The dose: most vitamin companies sell is 5000 mcg. There is no good evidence that Biotin will increase the speed of hair growth however. Hope this helps!

Yes, but: You can take prenatal vitamins anytime. Even men can take prenatal vitamins without any harm. (but it won't make your hair grow - sorry!).

Yes: Telogen effluvium is common in pregnancy and is self limiting.

If  deficient in a: mineral or vit it might. Get adequate sleep,avoid excess sugar &amp; fat, v carbonated drinks, eat enough protein, exercise regularly. Insure you have adequate Iron (like kale &amp; other dark green leafies), Omega 3 fatty acids (like walnuts),vit.E (fruits &amp; veggies), D &amp; B vitamins, biotin &amp; zinc. Avoid sulfates &amp; formaldehyde in shampoos, excessive blow dry heat &amp; curling irons.

i'm trying to grow my hair out and people tell me that taking  pre-natal vitamins helps it grow really fast. is it okay to take when not pregnant?

Totally OK: It's best to take pre-natal vits BEFORE one becomes pregnant, as they're most important the first 2 weeks of pregnancy and many women don't know they're pregnant the first 2 weeks. Thus ALL women of childbearing age who are sexually active should take pre-natals preventively. 
Pre-natals are a multivit. with a limited amount of Vit A (too much A bad if pregnant). I advise multivits for everybody.

This might be: Related to the fact that iron deficiency can cause hair loss and prenatal vitamins generally have a significant amount of iron.

May help: I have had a lot of patients tell me they have had success in obtaining longer, thicker, healthier hair and nails while taking prenatal vitamins whether they've been pregnant or not. It will not hurt you to take them if you are not pregnant. Some of the essential hair growth vitamins are Vitamin C, Biotin, and Niacin among others. Good luck!
