Correct to a degree: They are like a parachute and open widely to a maximum length, but not quite to the adjoining wall, of aorta, so there is flow behind to the coronary orifices.
More like a sheet floating in the wind.

Open: The bicuspid or mitral valve would be open when the left atrium contracts. It opens during diastole (heart is relaxed) and blood is flowing from the atrium to the ventricle. The contraction of the left atrium results in the valve opening wider and an increase in that flow.

LAE: Left atrial enlargement may occur as a result of abnormalities of the mitral valve.  Once this has been repaired or replaced (sounds like mitral stenosis) the atrium may or may not return to normal size, but the heart should be functioning better.  Best that your sister or you discuss this at length with the cardiologist and cardiovascular surgeon.  Hope all goes well.
