how long will you need a cast for a broken thumb?

It depends: What part of the thumb is broken? A phalanx or metacarpal fracture in the hand will generally heal in about six weeks. Cast immobilization for about four weeks, though, is often sufficient, with gradual return to normal hand activities at six weeks or so. Much, though, depends on the bone that is fractured, as well as any other medical issues (smoking/diabetes) which can slow the healing process.

Thumb fracture: You should take all fractures seriously. Be sure to listen to your physician and their recommendations. You should never remove a cast on your own. If you need your cast removed, call your physicians office to have someone trained take it off for you.

broken thumb. dr gave me choice of splint or cast for 3 weeks. i opted for splint but am nervous. he was so busy and just said cast it later if i want?

Don't Worry : If the doctor gave you a choice, then you have to trust that it was a real choice and the splint is as good as the cast - that is, of course, as long as you wear the splint. If you don't wear the splint, that is a different story. If you have an issue with the splint call the office and ask to come in sooner rather than later to adjust the splint or switch to a cast.

thumb/wrist frozen solid after cast removal 2 weeks ago for broken thumb(first metacarpal at the base).thumb is still swollen/sensitive. what's wrong?

Thumb and wrist: See your Orthopedist and have him exam you and take new X-rays and maybe an MRI if indicated.  How did you break your thumb and 1st MT???  It might be that you fractured more than your thumb and 1st MC.

Thumb surgery: Some times you would need a cast after thumb surgery. Some times a protective dressing would be adequate. Your surgeon would be the one that i would take advice from as he/she will know how much protection and for how long it will be required following your particular surgery.

See your doctor: Brcause of the importance of the thumb in the use of the hand, thumb fractures should be evaluated by your doctor to give you the best chance of a full recovery.

is it possible for you to still bend a broken thumb?

Yes: A broken thumb( metacarpal or proximal / distal phalanx) will cause pain and occ. Deformity but it does not impede flexion of the digit. The flexor pollicus longus is still functioning normally as are the thenar muscles.Sometimes a broken thumb will cause enough pain that the patient avoids flexion... But the fpl and thenar muscles are still working. Hope that helps!

Terrible bad!!!!!!!!: One reliable sympton of a broken bone is horrible pain.  The broken bone just does not want to be moved at all.  A bad strain could also give just as much pain, so that is why your physician often needs an x-ray to help sort things out.  Some fractures such as an impacted fracture of the upper arm or a skull fracture may not be that painful, so we do not just go by pain.  Go for an exam by your md.

Fracture: It may be impossible to differentiate without an xray. Both can be swollen, painful and difficult to bend. Only an xray will see the fracture.
