Basics: Nitrofurantoin was approved in 1989 for use as an antibiotic under the supervision of a physician. It has been prescribed millions of times &amp; remains on the market due to it's proven safety in general use. Any individual patient may have a reaction to any antibiotic or side effects. Monitoring of such issues by the treating physician is always a standard of practice.

i take macrobid every time i have sex because i have reoccurring uti's, i heard it causes liver/lung problems& fibrosis, is long term use safe?

Macrobid: Macrobid has been used for many years for treatment of uti's both acute and chronic and also as prophylaxis in preventing uti's in sexually active women. Patients on any long term drug need to be monitored by their physician. There possible problems with the long term use of this drugs, liver function needs to be monitored. There are rare lung complications including lung fibrosis.

hi, i took an at home uti test, came back positive. i'm worried about my liver working overtime as i may have liver disease. is 3 days of macrobid enough if at home test is negative? symptoms were mild to begin with, just slight aching/frequency?

: If you have an uncomplicated urinary tract infection-meaning no urological risk factors like renal stones, urinary catheter use, etc.-then 3 days of an antibiotic that the organism is sensitive to should be enough. Ask your doctor for advice if uncertain about your risk factors. Have you seen a liver specialist for diagnosis/treatment of your liver issues? Good luck to you!

Here are some ...: Is "... my 3rd ..." referred to the 3rd dose or 3rd course of taking Macrobid, with 100 mg twice daily or once? Largely, this drug is still effective for some 75-80% of times despite its decades-long use. For most uncomplicated UTIs in young sexually active females, a course of 50-100 mg twice daily for 3-5 days is most commonly recommended. If not improved as expected, make sure to have U-culture

i've been taking nitrofurantoin for 3 days and experiencing numbness in hands and feet. i called the doctor to switch meds. will this numbness if from the nitrofurantoin go away? how can i flush this medicine out of my system quickly?

: If this is a medication reaction causing toxicity to peripheral nerves, this should dissipate over 3-4 weeks after medication is D/C'd.  Recommend a B-50 complex, once daily over the next 4-6 weeks.  Otherwise, change medication and be patient.

Yes but why?: Yes but why do you need to take these 2 drugs?  Nitrofurantoin is a urinary antiseptic that does not achieve adequate tissue levels to treat an invasive infection.  It has many severe potential toxicities including nausia and vomitting that occur in 17-39%, severe lung reactions, hepatitis, hemolytic anemia and peripheral neuropathy.  Because of the above i rarely prescribe this drug.

Drug interaction: Checker revealed no significant medication interactions between nitrofurantion ; celebrex (celecoxib).

im on nitrofurantoin for uti and i have a headache can i take something for it?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Most routine pain meds do not interact or interfere with your nitrofurantoin. Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen & many other products would be fine.

: I wouldn't expect any difficulties with doing so. You can check with your pharmacist about any possible interaction problems but I'm not aware of any.
