To prevent retention: Avodart (dutasteride) physically shrinks your prostate gland and is typically best suited for men with larger glands (&gt;30 cc) and urinary obstruction.

Avodart serves patients well by preventing the need for surgery (TURP) in patients with large glands who are at risk for urinary retention.

Flomax+Dutasteride work better together than either alone in men with large glands.

Not the same : Flomax (tamsulosin) is an fda approved medicine with known safety and efficacy. Saw palmetto has failed multiple controlled trials.  You're welcome to take it; most supplements have a 20% placebo effect.

Same groups: You listed alpha blocker(flomax or tamsulosin),5-alpha reductase inhibitor(finasteride,dutasteride or avodart),combination of both groups(Jalyn)and PDE5 inhibitor(cialis).Any other drugs I give you will be in those groups.If none has helped you,talk to your urologist about TUR prostate or other surgical options.TUR is the "gold standard" with which other surgical options are compared.Good luck.

Yes.: Flomax (tamsulosin) is part of a family of drugs called alpha-blockers that relax the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck, improving urine flow & symptoms. Other drugs in this group are terazosin, doxazosin, alfuzosin, & silodosin. Another family of drugs for BPH are 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, such as Finasteride and dutasteride.  These shrink the prostate and reduce episodes of urine retention.

been on .4 mg / day flomax (tamsulosin) for bph over 2 years.  i have 4 or 5 side effects.  after i stop when will they subside, and could anything be permanent?

1-2 weeks: Most men notice improvement within a week or two at the most. That said, they also notice a relapse of urinary obstructive symptoms within a similar time period. Monitor yourself for both issues to take the proper course of action.

The pills: Are a "treatment" not a "cure". Check w/your physician and/or urologist as your BPH may have worsened or changed.
