Prescription creams: 1% Betamethasone Valerate or Kenalog (triamcinolone) are only available in US by prescription. Might work, but less likely as get older, i.e. your age. Will not work if phimotic ring is scarred, in which case surgery is only viable option. 0.Try it, might help nut don't be disappointed if it does not or recurs.

if a rash appears in the same area, but goes away by itself or after a week of topical steroids, and doesnt reappear for months or longer, is it unlikely to be squamous cell carcinoma? is that persistent and so wouldnt go away with topical steroids?

: While the described behavior would be highly atypical for a cancer to respond to steroids, rare conditions that involve inflammation around a tumoral site cannot be ruled out. Best would be to take also pictures of the site when irritated and when not and see your doc to have a resolution and better plan overall.

i have eczema around my mouth & tacrolimus ointment 0.1% didn't work. unconfident in new derm who prescribed steroid ointment before seeing me. old derm said steroids are too strong for face & i know people w/ topical steroid withdrawal. is it safe?

: There are always concerns about applying steroid ointment or creams to the face and it should only be prescribed &amp; supervised by a dermatologist. If you're not satisfied with your current status or treatment, I recommend consulting a dermatologist with a special interest in eczema at the department of dermatology at a university hospital near you.

Yes: The use of  topical steroids is for a variety of cutaneous, mucosal and  occular conditions to name a few. This also includes your  pets. They are  safe  but like any medication you take they can have side effects. Theirs can include allergic reaction  to the product, infection, tissue atrophy if you use too high a amount on thin skin. The safety is similar in women, men, children, pets, etc.

Depends: If topical steroids are used for short periods then they should be tolerated fine. Some steroids are more potent then others. They can lighthen or discolor the skin if used too long. They can cause atophy or loss of skin and sometimes tissue just below the skin.
