i've been taking 20mg of generic lexapro for eight weeks, i don't see any improvement in my anxiety and depression, should i give it longer to work?

Anti depressants: Please talk w/your doc about this.  He/she may adjust your dose.  SSIRs, the type of med you are on, take about a month to work usually.  Research shows that psychotherapy plus meds is the best combo for making progress.  Consider getting some support from a clinical psychologist or other therapist.  Peace and good health.

put on lexapro 5mg in may, a week later was upped to 10mg i dont feel like it has done anything is it possible that itll work eventually & is just taking longer than the standard 6-8 weeks? i have ocd, depression, gad & panic disorder

Psychiatrist: I trust you're under the care of a psychiatrist. These disorders can be overwhelming if not well controlled. Cognitive behavioral therapy in conjunction with the appropriate medications and dosing are often needed to help you cope. Let your treating physician or psychiatrist know that you're still having issues.

Psychology: I would suggest a psychological evaluation and CBT ( cognitive behavioral therapy) as well as RET ( rational emotive therapy ). Please read "The Relaxation Response" by Herbert Benson, M.D.

i decreased my lexapro dose from 10mg to 5mg on 3/19 ... the 10mg was just too much for me. i'm wondering if i need to give the new 5mg dosage 6-8 weeks to fully work just like you have to do with an increase?

: It is curious why the 10 mg was too more for you. If it was effective then it likely was the correct dose. You probably have been on the 5 mg long enough to see if it is effective for you. It sounds not. You could start by increasing to 7.5 mg daily to see if that is of good benefit and follow-up with your doctor.

No problem: It looks like you meant to write 5mg to 10mg of Lexapro (escitalopram) (.5mg Lexapro (escitalopram) doesn't exist). Consult prescriber with dosage changes. There is no issue with increasing from 5 to 10mg of Lexapro (escitalopram) once per day. Monitor for side effects closely (racing thoughts, agitation).

It depends: Medication efficacy depends on the symptoms you had when you started, and what you continue to have after the therapeutic window.  It is usually recommended that you give an antidepressant 6-8 weeks to see if it is working.  If your symptoms have not, or have minimally improved, a dosage adjustment is reasonable.  The usual therapeutic dose of Lexapro (escitalopram) is 10 mg.  But you have to give any med time.

Different chemical..: Different chemicals in the same class have different effect/side effect profile. Add to it individual variation  of response to the chemical......It is not a perfect science yet to match med to the person with disease....

Yes: Should work but let your prescriber know you restarted it so they can check your kidney function (up to date labs) to see that you are safe to take it.

3 to 5 weeks: This is a fairly low starting dose so if not feeling any better after three weeks tell your doctor.  Your dose may need to change

Hard to say: Could take up to 3 weeks.  Remember though that the changes will be subtle at best.  Keep in regular contact with your prescribing doctor and discuss your symptoms.
