Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate): This combination antibiotic works by inhibiting cell wall synthesis by susceptible bacteria, with the clavulanic acid blocking enzymes which might otherwise destroy the amoxicillin. WBCs finish the job. The half-life is quite short and the drug should be given at least every 6 hrs, but this depends upon what you are treating, where in body and other variables. Complex issue.

Take your meds: as prescribed,  rest and push more fluids, keep the follow up with your doctor, if not better in few days go to the hospital, you may need a urologist input, at times UTI takes more time to get over, wish you well

yesterday my doctor precribed me co-amoxiclav. for an infection in my mouth and armpit. when will the antibotics start to work as i still in pain?

Antibiotics: Pain is one manifestation of the inflammatory response of your body to the presence of bacteria causing infection.  It may take longer to dissipate the pain than to eradicate the organisms since the inflammatory response may persist for a while.  Assuming the antibiotic is in fact effective for your condition the pain should begin to resolve over the next several days.

do longer term infections take longer to heal with antibiotics? i have had a stubborn ear infection for 6 weeks. amoxicillin failed. been taking co-amoxiclav for nearly 4 days and i dont feel much better. wait longer or go back to doctor?

Sinus congestion: Sinus congestion may prolong  recovery, and use of nasal saline sprays is suggested. Continue the antibiotic for a full course, but if you have fever or worsening, please follow up with your PCP. Watch for signs of green nasal dc and prolonged cough.

Yes: While http://www.drugs.com/interactions-check.php?drug_list=189-0,1009-0 reports minor interaction, it doesn't appear to be as problematic as both are known to be rather harsh on your gut, thus increasing risk for diarrhea. BTW, always best to ask prescribing doc &amp; dispensing pharmacist before accepting new medications. And tell them everything you take including dietary supplements.

Every 8 hours: Three times a day would make it 8 hours apart. 6am, 3pm, 11pm. The 4 hour message is if u miss a dose and take it late, don't take the next dose within 4 hours.

No: On the morning of the surgery, you can take it with a sip of water since you will be npo.
