hi, i've read herpes outbreaks last 1-2 weeks but someone said it can get better in hours to a day. my lips were tingling since 2 days ago, then yesterday i had what looked like a few tiny white ulcers & now they're gone. lips look dry now, herpes?

: Tingling is often a forerunner of a cold sore outbreak. An eruption may clear in a few days, a week or much longer. It's variable among different people but less than a week is much less common.

Probably not . . .: but it will become obvious very soon if it is. The shared pipe is trivial and may not transmit a Herpetic infection under any circumstance. Your biggest risk of oral Herpes comes from family members.

Yes: Usual incubation is 7 days but can be 2. Prodrome is more associated with RECURRENT herpes than with primary.

Nerve: These sound like irritable superficial nerves and, in the absence of lesions, don't suggest a herpes outbreak.If frequent tingling or pins and needles sensations occur in scattered areas of your body, get checked for deficiencies of calcium,magnesium, potassium,vitamin b12 or iron.

Bloodwork?: Herpes cultures will only be positive about 60% of the time, even with active disease.  Having bloodwork to look for antibodies to the herpes virus can help confirm the diagnosis.

Less than a week: Assuming you are referring to herpes zoster (shingles) the rashes on the skin usually appear in less than a week and mostly 2-3 days.

Herpes simplex: Can be early symptoms of herpes outbreak. When this subliminal pain occurs it is not always followed by full blown lesions.  It is not clear why different presentations occur in different individuals.

Not really: The symptoms of  genital herpes only occur with an outbreak which should only last 5-7 days and are usually associated with small blisters that ulcerated and crust over.

Testing: Testing for herpes would either involve a blood test or a culture of visible lesions/sores.  If you are sexually active and have not been using protection, it may be prudent to get std screening regardless of symptoms you may be experiencing right now.
