Less than 1 week: The general results from a bone marrow biopsy are usually available in less than 1 week.  This will depend on the lab/pathologists reviewing the bone marrow and usually it is just 2-4 days.  However some special tests may be done on the specimen that can take additional time.  Also, molecular and cytogenetic (chromosome) tests can take longer.

Plasma Cells: Plasma cells are a normal component of bone marrow.  A higher percentage than normal can indicate certain conditions such as multiple myeloma or MGUS.  It is important to understand that any test needs to be interpreted in the context of other clinical findings.  Discuss these results with your physician to figure out the diagnosis.

would you trust a bone marrow biopsy results if it says severely hemodiluted and sub optimal for evaluation clinical correlation recommended and tell your patient their results are normal?

: A sub optimal biopsy specimen is more valuable when abnormal finding is found then the biopsy result can be correlated with other clinical findings. However, if there is no abnormal finding in a sub optimal biopsy specimen we should not conclude normal pathology, regardless of other clinical findings.

: If you have monoclonal gammopathy and bone marrow biopsy was done for ruling out multiple myeloma, you likely do not have this condition (less than 5% chance) and you have a condition called MGUS (monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance). You should be monitored by an oncologist in the future. However, if there is light chain in your urine, you may need to be treated.

Typically: 2 to 3 working days. A rapid preliminary result can be available in hours with a concern for acute leukemia. If a reference lab is used it can take 7-10 days.

Months: The small hole in the bone left by a bone marrow biopsy will heal over a period of a few months.  However the size and location of the bone defect will not cause any changes in the strength of the bone.  There is no increased risk of fracture.

Chronic anemia: Not uncommon, in normocytic anemia  if they want to see how the cells are generating  RBC, whether it is making  cells or not making cells.  Have you also been tested  for celiac disease, thyroid disease G6PD,  and medications  that can sometimes cause anemia  as well? .

Accepted Answer

You need a good Hema: A consultation with a hematologist is advised. Low iron can reduce red cell formation and cause anemia but it does not affect white cells( to cause neutropenia).
