Accutane: There are multiple birth defects associated with intrauterine exposure to accutane. There is a certain critical time in the pregnancy where the greatest amount of potential harm can occur. Genetic counseling is strongly recommended to determine what possible effects Accutane exposure could have.

No: pregnancy has to be avoided 1 month before starting treatment, during treatment and one month after stopping the treatment, need to use two methods of contraception if sexually active, before, during and after treatment. Check information on the 'ipledge' program. Other side effects than fetal problems, are numerous, and the drug should be used under strict medical supervision, best wishes

Who says it's safe?: It is one of the more toxic drugs, and the only reason we use it is because for some people, the pain of living with severe acne makes its risks worthwhile. Accutane acts on rapidly growing tissues, which is why it is contraindicated in pregnancy; but it does not appear to be as toxic to ovaries and eggs as it is to an embryo or a fetus.

Prenatal vitamins: Vitamins don't help you conceive faster, but prenatal vitamins with at least 800 micrograms (mcg) to 1 milligram (mg) of Folic Acid lower the risk of spina bifida. Talk to your OB if taking anti-seizure meds or a family / personal history of birth defects; you may need 4-5 mg of folic acid. Avoid excess alcohol, smoking, marijuana & other drugs, and review any prescription meds with your doctors.

Some basics: Every pregnancy has a basic risk approaching 4% of an unexpected outcome including birth defects,prematurity,infection &amp; others. A fetus makes its own insulin &amp; good glucose control limits the risk of an oversized baby or one with hypoglycemia after the cord is clamped. Insulin use may/not be in your future. You cannot eliminate all risk but good control maximizes your chance for a normal outcome

Depends on virus: Some localized viral issues like colds are very limited in their penetration into the body & don't have a blood phase. These are unlikely to affect a fetus.Those that have a blood phase, like german measles, can cause fetal loss, hearing & vision loss, cataracts & more. Effect is often influenced by the timing (before or after organs finished forming) & aggressive nature of the virus.

HMG & birth defects: Use of hmg would be the same incidence of birth defects as getting pregnant without the medication.
