Vitamin D: Vitamin D has many benefits beyond calcium balance.  there are now studies suggesting beneficial effects on the immune system.  Certainly if you had a history of kidney stones one could argue that vitamin D might not be in your interest, but, typically it is a desirale vitamin supplement

Get some sun!: Docs will often prescribe 2000 IU of Vitamin D daily to patients that are deficient or 50,000 IU once a month. They may prescribe more for severe deficiency. If you cannot tolerate the pills, a little sun will do the trick.  Too much sun we worry about skin cancer, but if you are fair skinned 10 minutes in the mid-day sun will provide you with 10,000 IU. This would not be a great risk skin cancer.

Vitamin D3 & sun!: The best thing to take for low vit. D is vit. D but it's important to take the d3 form as the d2 form is dangerous! most adults need 5-8, 000 iu/day to attain optimal levels, but in spring & summer you can also get it by spending time in the mid-day sun without sunscreen. If you don't get much sun then take d3 year-round.It's best to take 5-10, 000 iu of vit a & 1mg of vit k too-they work as a team.

Low vitamin D3: There is a group of patients who do not absorb vitamin D3 efficiently. They seem to require higher doses of  oral D3 ( 6000 to 10000 units daily) to achieve adequate blood levels, (between 40 and 70). Don't give up, stay on your vitamin D3 and get an annual blood level. Be well.
