As a rough guide an elderly person loses about 10% of muscle function per day of immobility.  If there are other factors, e.g., fever, nutritional impairment, trauma, and some medications, e.g., steroids, the muscle atrophy is worsened.

Not as much help: Hi, while it is important to have a balaced diet with a bit more protein than usual, it will not really stop muscle atrophy. You need to use as much muscle as possible preferably weight bearing.I would need to know more about the degree of temporary disablity that you will have. Is is possible to use your upper or lower body muscles? That would help.Physical therapy even passive would benefit you.

2 Types: There are 2 forms of muscle atrophy: disuse atrophy, i.e. This come actual lack of activity or 'using' the muscle. Astronauts on space developed disuse atrophy, and exercise programs were instituted. 2nd type is neurogenic atrophy. This result from injury or damage to the spinal cord or spinal nerves, also from nerve disease such as als,  polio, guillain-barre syndrome, muscular dystrophy, etc.

Yes, and MUCH more: Levofloxacin and related drugs have been reported to cause muscle atrophy among many other serious side effects. A high percentage report muscle pain, weakness, tendonitis and tendon rupture but it can also cause even more serious longstanding problems. In the case of diabetes, the most common cause of atrophy is the development of peripheral neuropathy which damages the nerves mainly in the legs but can also affect the arms. This causes loss of sensation, pain and sometimes atrophy.
