: "Depo shots" are progestin, and provide contraception as soon as injected, however there is still a small chance of pregnancy.  If bleeding occurred, it was possibly a menstrual event. The chance of pregnancy is less than 4%.

Understanding med: The prime benefit of depot shot or similar hormonals in pill form is the prevention of ovulation (releasing an egg) by making the body think you are already pregnant. Since most ovulate mid-cycle, the timing is an issue.If you ovulated the day you got the shot,or soon after, it wouldn't prevent you from getting pregnant.Most recommend a backup form of BC for at least a few weeks if not a month.

Difficult to say: With Depo Provera - you might have a period soon after it should have been due, but sometimes getting a period to return may take months, especially if you have gained weight while on depo provera

Doubt pregnancy: Unpredictable bleeding is a common side-effect of Depo Provera--especially during the first 6 months of use.  It doesn't mean you are pregnant.  If this is the first time it has happened, you might want to do a pregnancy test for reassurance; however, it is most likely to be negative.  Best wishes!
