Highly variable: Some children are only minimally delayed, others never learn to talk.  Autism is a highly variable disease.

Please see below.: There are lots of disabilities other than autism spectrum disorders.  The reason why it seems that autism diagnoses are more common is that we have learned that autism is not just the severe form (like rain man), but includes a whole spectrum, ranging from severe down to very mild (like asperger's syndrome).

Autism and hallucina: It is quite possible that  your son could be having an episode of auditory hallucinations causing his ability to function and suddenly stop talking. Psychotic symptoms can often be confused with autistic behaviors even though they may present similar but different manifestation gadow et al 2012. If this the case the addition or adjustment of an antipsychotic may confirm diagnosis.

Hard to say: This is something that a developmental pediatrician and/or a speech and language specialist should evaluate. In the US this is routinely done as part of the "Chile Find" program operated by public schools for kids as young as 3.

Not necessarily: Autistic children have problems with social interaction and understanding of usual social skills.  They often stare at people and objects almost too much, but may not look when being talked to or when trying to talk.  Part of behavioral therapy is to help them understand how to use looking and attention in a more appropriate manner.

I don't know if you: Are in any form of treatment right now. There are psychoeducational groups for people who have high functioning autism - to allow them to build on social skills. If your believe that you are becoming overly sensitive - cognitive behavioral therapy may help. And if the  relationship with your mum is strained - family therapy can also be  beneficial. Various approaches: There is no proven cure for autism, but a variety of interventoins can help improve function.  Broadly, they break down into behavioral, educational, and physiological.  There is no compelling evidence that any currently available physical intervention (vitamin supplements, chelation therapy, hyperbaric oxygen treatments and on and on) "fix" autism.  Beware or excessive promises.

Stare not at you: Sometimes kids seem to zone out , stare but not at people, almost as though they are"snowed" . This is felt by some to be the effect of maldigested products of casein &/or gluten that behave like endogenous opiates-but this in controversial.

Not specific: Autism is a disorder of appropriate social and verbal development.  It may present in infancy as a defect in social awareness and eye contact, or later in childhood with regression in verbal language and inability to tolerate social settings.  Some acquire autism due to injury, infection, or other neurological disease.  Once signs are apparent, good therapy is necessary at any age.
