Highly variable: Some children are only minimally delayed, others never learn to talk. Autism is a highly variable disease.

It depends: Every child is different and some with autism never develop a truly functional form of verbal communication. Many of these individuals are able to utilize communication devices in place of spoken word. Of those children who eventually develop language four to six years of age is where you will often see this happen.
