Yes it can.: Yes, sleep deprivation can cause both irritability and mild euphoria.  Studies show decreased sleep increases the amount of Dopamine in the brain, promoting an amphetamine like response. This wakefulness comes with a decrease in the brain's  processing ability.  Sleep loss is also associated with increased appetite, risk of stroke, and heart disease.

If you find that your life has spun out of control then please get care at an emergency room.

Complex: Perhaps your neck pain is causing sleep disruption, but the abrupt dream phases raises questions of a sleep disorder in addition, and the insomnia can be eventually rather debilitating.  You may well be a candidate for an overnight sleep study.

Sleep hygiene: Also practice good sleep hygiene.  Avoid the use of smartphones, other bright screens before bedtime.  Keep television out of the room. Limit caffeine intake.

Yes: A recent study associated the use of sleeping pills with a greater risk of dying. This doesn't prove cause & effect but it is certainly worrisome. I'd recommend trying non-pharmacologic means first before moving on towards medications. Sometimes we don't have the luxury of time on our side and have to prescribe something immediately.

Pending on what the exam and labs show there are sleep labs that monitor you over night and the doctors that do this specialize in correcting sleep disorders. The sleep labs are usually associated with a hospital system.

Difficulty falling: Asleep is often associated w/anxiety while waking up early and not returning to sleep is associated w/depression.  Periodic waking is associated w/overall light sleep.  Please see you doc who may order a sleep study.  A psychologist can help w/stress management.   Try not to nap in daytime, no stimulants after noon, and no computer or phone 1 h. prior to bed time.
