Sure, but...: Viral infections usually resolve on their own in a few days to a few weeks. Two months is a bit long, but sometimes a virus can stay around. More likely the issue is more than one viral infection, one after another, or something other than a viral infection. One's doctor can evaluate, and maybe swab the throat.

Totally depends...: ...on your own immune reaction, the specific virus &amp; whether you get a secondary bacterial infection. If it's truly a virus, expect anywhere from a 3-10 day ride, of varying severity. An acute EBV pharyngitis can last a few days, but a chronic infection in your liver &amp; lymphocytes can brew for weeks to months. There are a gazillion viruses that can cause a sore throat, often never identified.

Its most common: Most cases of pharyngitis are caused by various viruses such as rhinovirus.  If you have exudate on your tonsils or pharynx, if you have fever, if you have tender swollen lymph nodes you should have a rapid strep test to rule out group a streptococcus infection.  If not you probably have viral pharyngitis and it will resolve spontaneously.

Comfort measures: Rx is focused on encouraging adequate fluid intake in liquids or slushy foods. Other comfort foods & meds like Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen  are also helpful.Popsicles, chewing gum, suckers etc all can help.

Depend how often: If you have only had one episode then that is no reason to have your tonsils out. Typically this is what i'm thinking about taking out tonsils for infection we use the following: seven infections in one year or four infections a year for two years or three infections a year for three years. Of course if you have airway blockage because your tonsils are so big or chronic  discharge that can cause opinions about tonsillectomy to change.

Usually not: Most problems are viral in origin. Then self limited. In certain viruses are persistent like ebv & have sequela as well as mononucleosis but usually are associatd with other problems. It should last 3 to 5 days. If not seek medical care.

Yes it can,: but so can a lot of other conditions, some of them serious.  You should see a doctor to make sure that the tightness will not lead to airway obstruction.
