complete tear of the ligament.Gross instability occurs. Usually 6 months or longer.

Ankle sprain: Depending on the severity of the ankle sprain, it can take from 4 to 8 weeks to heal. There are 3° of injury. One is a stretch of the ligaments, 2nd° is a partial tear of the ligaments. 3 degree is a total tear of the ligaments . 3rd degree tears take a good 8 weeks to heal.

About 6 weeks: Wide variation in severity of sprains- depending on how much of the ligament(s) tear. Rule of thumb is that the ligament will be weaker than normal for at least 6 weeks, even if pain resolves- so wear a brace or avoid activities at high risk for turning the ankle (basketball, tennis, soccer are a few) if pain persists, you have locking, or recurrent instability- get it checked.

You : You absolutely should get it x-rayed to make sure you don't have a stress fracture.

That being said, your choice of the words "on fire" and "numb" make me suspect a nerve injury.  Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a possibility, but this usually comes on gradually, not right after trauma.  You may have a nerve impingement, or something called neuropraxia, which is when a nerve gets stretched suddenly, which you might have done when you fell.

Your first order of business is to get whatever is causing your pain diagnosed.  You can either go to a podiatrist or an orthopedic surgeon, have an x-ray, and see about the condition of the nerves in your foot & ankle.

Ankle sprain : High ankle sprains can take longer to heal then a low ankle sprain. The minimum time is 6 weeks but can last up to 3 months. Use a brace or fracture boot for support.

Eight weeks: It will take eight weeks to heal and two more weeks to do functional rehab.  If it is a true grade three the swelling will last 3 months.  I treat grade three ankle sprains with a cast for 7-10 days, and then an agressive rehab program.  They should be taped to resume athletic activities.

High sprain: You need to see a podiatrist or orthopod - it takes more than ice to heal one of these.

A matter of trust: It all comes down to trust.  If you saw an orthopedic surgeon (especially if they specialize in lower extremity) or a sports medicine physician and you trust them, then a second opinion is likely not going to change the diagnosis.  However, please discuss the value of the MRI with your doctor based on how confident (s)he is with the diagnosis.  If very confident, then MRI again less likely to help.
