when can i play sports again on a sprained ankle?

When feeling better: After having an ankle sprain, a person can rest a few days until the ankle feels better. He can try sports again but start with light exercise and gradually increase the activities as long as the ankle doesn't hurt during or right after the exercise. If the ankle hurts, then he may be doing too much too soon, so he should rest and try again in a couple of days.

Evaluation, PT: First of all you should have worn an ankle brace after your first sprain while playing sports. Now that you have re-injured it, rest, ice elevate. I suggest you start PT again but first see a Podiatrist to evaluate the extent of the current injury.

Get evaluated: I would recommend seeing a doctor.  You should have an xray to make sure it's only a sprain and not worse.  If it's truly a sprain, your doctor may immobilize you in an ankle brace, offload with crutches, and recommend simple things like rice therapy; rest, ice, compression wraps and elevation.

does taping your ankle sprain with sports tape from the sports store help you more than an ace wrap does? taping seems stronger and tighter than ace.

Accepted Answer

No: Taping is not for recent injuries.  It is for old injuries to help prevent re-injury.  Taping is too tight and dangerous in the early post-injury stages.  Ace wraps are elastic and can accommodate some swelling.  Right after injury you are trying to reduce swelling, not cut off blood flow.  Use and ace wrap until the swelling is resolved, then start taping for return to sports.

Accepted Answer

It takes about: 6-8 weeks for bone to heal. Assuming it did heal in that time, I would recommend another few weeks before getting back int anything competitive. But, this all depends on your xrays and clinical findings. At the end of the day, its whst your treating doc decides.

Minimally 12 weeks: Without a complete history of your injury and sports activity, the non-displaced fractures will take a minimum of 6-8 weeks to heal (assuming there are no complications in healing) and in general soft tissue injuries such as the an ankle sprain will be longer about 12 weeks (= 3 months).  Again, that is assuming that you are compliant with treatment regimen prescribed by your doctor.

i am casted for a ankle sprain/and two minor fibula fractures. my foot isn't sore, so does that mean i can play sports as soon as my cast is gone?

Post injury rehab: Just as important as the treatment or surgery is the rehab of the extremity. The isolation of the part will weaken the muscles and hurt your balance. Several weeks to months of physical therapy often done to help bring you back to normal, and, even then, you'll have to ease back into the sport or activity or risk reinjury of the area(s).

i have bad sprained ankle and osteochondral defect in same ankle. could this cause the leg to get swollen (from below the knee down to the ankle)?

I would be concerned: For a clot in the leg and I don't think your symptom is consistent with your injury and advise you to have it checked out ASAP, always better safe then sorry.

Ankle sprain: In most instances, simple sprains will heal in 4 to 6 weeks with immobilization and pt.

Perhaps: Yu should be suing crutches and not stepping on the ankle which sounds like its not a simple strain but rather a grade two or three. Ice as often as possible. Keep it elevated when possible. Is it wrapped up? If not, sounds like it should until the immediate swelling goes down. Walking on a badly sprained and can lead to chronic lateral ankle instability.
