Same day: Most of the time after hernia repair will go home on the same day, however complex abdominal hernias that require extensive reconstruction, or after removal severe adhesion s, or hernia requiring bowel resections, may require one day to few days. Most common  inguinal hernia  repair patients go home immediately after the procedure.

Depends: This Question would best be answered by your surgeon.  Depending on your age, other medical conditions, etc, will often determine if you need to stay overnight or can do a same day procedure.  Having  an open Hernia repair with lysis of adhesions will often require an overnight stay, so be sure to ask and discuss with your Surgeon, best wishes.

Usually: It depends how extensive the operation is. Some take 45 minutes, some take 6-7 hours. I hope the operation goes well, and you will have to ask your surgeon. Just call the office, they will be happy to help you.

Variable: Small open repairs such as those at the belly button are typically done without a stay in the hospital. Large abdominal wall reconstruction patients typically stay in the hospital about a week. If there are complications, all bets are off. Call your surgeon to find out about your case.

in had a hernia repair about 3 cm above my bellybutton 4 weeks ago. i'm in severe pain have lost 14 kg and i'm constantly nauseous. i was readmitted to hospital but they can't find anything wrong.  i can't eat without feeling sick.

Second opinion: Ask to see another GI doctor just to get a fresh pair of eyes on the situation. The hernia surgery may be responsible but it could also be something unrelated. Never hurts to get a different perspective. In the meantime try to stay positive and take care of yourself the best you can!

going to shouldice hospital for inguinal hernia repair. i have read they remove genitofemoral nerve in shouldice technique. will i miss this nerve?

No: If they do it could have an area of numbness which is of no significance !!

why do hospitals consider hernia repair "cosmetic surgery"?

Hernia surgery: Would not be cosmetic unless combined with other plastic surgery abdominoplasty procedures. Also hospitals in general would have no reason to qualify a type of surgery, but a medical insurance company will make determinations as to what they may consider to be a necessary surgery or a "cosmetic" procedure.

taking occas hydrocodone aft hernia repair. sometimes works great. other times (w/similar pain) i get no relief; but worse, longer-lasting side effs.

Stop hydrocodone: Then I would stop the hydrocodone.  You don't say when your hernia repair was done, but most people don't need the strong stuff after a few days.

Not sure: What the question is. If your mom has infectious bacterial colitis with diarrhea diagnosed by proper testing, then yes antibiotics such as vancomycin or Flagyl may be prescribed. Usually immodium is avoided if there is infectious colitis causing diarrhea.

is mesh safe decades after hernia repair?

Usually: The safety of mesh has to do with the specific material used and what it was placed next to.  Some materials thought to be excellent 30 years ago have fallen out of favor.  They can create serious adhesions to adjacent structures such as the intestine, leading to bowel obstructions years later.  On the other hand, if it hasn't caused problems after 20+ years, the odds are in your favor.
