That is why you need to drink plenty of water daily and take fiber to keep the sttols formed but soft. Do not strain. If the fissure does not heal with conservative therapy (and many do) then surgery is needed.

There are different types of laxatives.  Some are safer than others . It depends on how they work.
Saline laxatives
Stimulant laxtives-most bowel addicting
Stool softners- colace
Osmotic laxatives- This is  Miralax type
If it becomes chronic or lasting more than 3 months, causing more symptoms  I would consider  finding out the cause of the constipation

Last resort is surgery.

Also make sure you are on a non constipating diet which contains lots of fiber.If after treatment you are not improving see a gastroenterologist to rule out an irritable bowel syndrome.

Wetting agent: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is primarily a wetting agent,that holds on to water as it moves through your system and softens the stool.It is not addicting,but when you wean off the material, I would do so gradually.When your stool softens, you should empty more often, so the fissure is not pressured by a larger volume. This should allow healing within a week or two, but recurrence can occur if you return to old habits
