Depends on severity: Somewhat different for the two. Carpal tunnel involving the median nerve at the wrist has a very quick recovery with many people feeling better immediately after surgery and returning to work sometimes in the same week or at most 3 or 4 weeks later. Cubital tunnel is very different involving the ulnar nerve at the elbow and sometimes requiring transposition of the nerve. Recovery is longer.

Move fingers: The most important excerise is to move your fingers. Make a tight fist hold it for 5 seconds and then bring your fingers all the way straight and hold it for 5 seconds. Typically no strengthening excersises are required your strength will return as the sorness resolves.

3-6 weeks: Typically pain goes away first (2-3 weeks); then numbness goes away (2-6 weeks) and finally strength may or may not return over the course of 2-4 months.

CTS surgery: Everyone is different. However, you should make sure the dressing is not too tight. If it is not, ask the surgeon at your next follow-up appointment, which should be coming up soon.

i had keyhole carpal tunnel surgery july 30th and am having a lot of pain still. im running out of meds. how much longer will this pain last :( ?

Another few days: Carpal tunnel surgery involves cutting the ligament that runs over the median nerve. Even with key hole surgery, the ligament still needs to be divided.  It will improve over the next few days.  Keep your arm elevated to help decrease swelling.  This usually helps the burning type pain.

my husband is having carpal tunnel surgery this week.  he wants to take a two hour road trip the day after surgery.  is that advisable?

Nope: Yes but with big cavests. If he doesn't do any driving grasping lifting or hanging his arm.  It's best to get permission from hand surgeon. Generally one should rest ice elevate and maintain compression after any surgery.

how long does it generally take your hand to heal after carpal tunnel surgery?

Quickly: With my patients, i generally let them use the hand same day as the surgery though they have a small bandage and they can't over do it. Stitches usually come out at two weeks and the following week they can pretty much do what they want. If there is weakness or other co-morbidity associated with the median nerve entrapment that of course needs to be factored in.

Varies: If your carpal tunnel is severe I would bet you cannot use your hands now......

Recovery varies, but fine motor is pretty good right away progressing to full strength after a few weeks.
