is it safe to give gripe water to my baby?

Unsure ingredients: Doctors usually don't give babies any medications, even over-the-counter items, unless there's good benefit. A mom can bring the item to the doctor to check the ingredients, but a little bit of a trusted brand of "gripe water" drops is ok to try. It may or may not help any colicky symptoms. If it doesn't seem to help, then it shouldn't be used. I don't recommend "gripe water" for my patients.

It is ok: Gripe water has different herbs in it. It is not addictive. Sounds like she is a little colicky and the gripe water helps reduce her belly discomfort. Hopefully you will only need the gripe water for a few weeks to a couple months as her digestive system matures and she can digest foods better.

They don't work. : Babies swallow air when crying &amp; bottle-feeding. Till ~ 6 weeks, their intestinal smooth muscle does not coordinate propulsion of  liquid &amp; air. Use the "football hold". Put baby on your forearm, head at your elbow,face down. Press your palm against his tummy, flex his hips, encircle one leg with your fingers &amp; roll him gently against your chest. Tilt head up to burp, tush up to pass gas.

No: The chemistries are different. The gas drops are supposed to break down the bubbles to pass in an easier fashion. Gripe contains a number of products traditionally used to calm the baby, in small quantities.Whether it works is not clear, as  are the gas drops.

Yes: Mylicon (simethicone) is safe for babies. It helps break up small bubbles so they can burp. Gripe water is generally safe for babies. However there are so many different kinds now. Check with your doctor about specific products.

Bowel movements: If youare breast feeding be aware that an infant may have a stool with each feeding. Go once a day or may do as long as a week without having one. All normal.

Yes..but...: Gripe water is innocuous and will give you something to do. Beyond that it's benefit is limited if any at all. Babies fuss using their breathing muscle which pushes their belly out &amp; tight. People assume it's a belly issue but it may not beat all. Unexplained fussiness in infants builds &amp; peaks at 6-8 wks and begins to fade when they are mature enough to roll over.
