Surgery or bone stim: Surgery or bone stimulation can help heal if symptomatic.  It is not considered a non union until 6 months.

i had surgery for displaced fractures of metatarsal 2 and 3.  does my foot need to be immobile?  i have a boot and was advised that weight bearing ok

No: Weight bearing is ok with boot, but of course no running, jumping. You can walk on it, but be reasonable and do not overdo use. But you do not have to be immobile.

It won't work: with stress fracture and most likely you have osteoporosis   You need to be non weight bearing to heal appropriate.  If you weight bear you are taking a risk of callus bone formation which bone growth around fracture that is weak and might cause refracture  in future

Specialist In What?: There are a few things to consider here.I'm hoping your "specialist"thought of them but just in case:did you do what was necessary to promote healing?(e.g. following instructions; not doing too much too soon, etc)There may be a "malunion" (delayed or arrested healing) or a small painful "neuroma" that has developed.May be the beginning of a regional pain syndrome.Hopefully, you'll just get better.

Sounds Amiss.: If it is still swollen and still painful after three months, then it is. more that likely not healed. It makes no sense to continue to put pressure on an apparently unstable fracture. You need to have it re-evaluated to determine the true extent of the healing or non-healing, whichever it may be.

4 1/2 months ago i had a base fifth metatarsal fracture in left foot. minimum displacement. got a cast for 6 weeks and then air cast boot till now. completely non weight bearing. but there is minimum healing. should i go for screw fixation surgery?

: Healing fractured bones becomes more difficult with age. Surgeries also become more dangerous. Choosing to not do surgery may leave you with difficulties and pain with walking which can affect your overall health. You need to carefully weigh these risks when deciding what your next step will be.

Partially: Depending upon what bone is involved, as well as, what part of that bone. Typically, if callus is seen, then begin partial or protected weight bearing with some sort of support. If small foot bone, then cast or removable boot. If large bone like femur (hip/knee) or tibia (knee/ankle), then may use brace and crutches. Place most weight on crutches and good leg while injured flat on ground.

i just fractured a part of my knee its a small one but it hurts badly! the doctor said no weight bearing but as an athlete i want to compete on it ?

Not a great idea: I agree with your doctor.Assuming that you have a knee frsacture, you are looking at a minimum of 4-8 weeks of no athletics, intensive PT and a knee brace. Continuing to compete with a knee fracture willl ultimately lead to poor healing or post traumatic arthritis.

can u stress a healing fracture out by doing rehab while  its healin but no weight bearing tibula and fibula?

Accepted Answer

Usualy not: You are not weight bearing but using the pressure from the muscles around  the bone, if fracture is stable  you should not have any problem.
