: You have been immobilized for seven weeks and the joints of your ankle are stiff, so you have to ease into it.  Tissue damage is marked by the five symptoms of inflammation, redness, soreness, heat, swelling and loss of function. It is going to take time, so go gently!

just got my foot out of a boot for 8 weeks due to an ankle fracture. my foot is swollen and purple in color. i was told to start walking on it with no restrictions. is this normal?

: Try walking and that would help the muscles that were not in use be strengthened so the fluid would be mobilized and you should have less swelling and improved circulation. Your foot would let you know the restriction so you could graduate your activities as tolerated by the foot.

About ankle injuries: Fractures are broken bones, and there will be pain when a bone breaks. Different people have differing perceptions of pain, so it's possible for somebody with a very high pain tolerance to say his broken ankle doesn't hurt much. If a sprained ankle is very painful or if not improving daily after the first two days, a doctor's exam can help decide whether or not there is a fracture.

Depends: On the fracture. Since, we don't see the x-rays, need to leave this decision to the treating physician.

6-12 weeks or more: Generally, bones heal in about 6-8 weeks. Depending on the severity of your ankle fracture (did it involve the fibula and the tibia or just the fibula?), and depending on the need for surgery, you may have a fair amount of swelling in the ankle, which could preclude wearing heals for much longer than 6-8 weeks. Swelling can take up to a year to improve, and may never fully resolve.

Depends: On where on the fibula the fracture is and if displaced or not. Consult with your orthopedist.
