No: Everyone's body chemistry and drug tolerance/sensitivity is different. Whenever possible is best to titrate off psych meds, meaning take one every other day for a week and then one every three days the following in your case. Additionally always let your physician know what you're doing so s/he can better assist you when you go back for your next apt.

Depends on details: A person taking a prescription drug is doing that because his doctor found an illness or disorder that causes symptoms. Symptoms are likely decreased by the drug and/or the person's life is better while on the drug. We on a free public forum have no knowledge of such details, but in general, if the diagnosis and treatment are correct, then stopping treatment BEFORE cure may bring back symptoms.

Headache prevention: Depakote (valproic acid) is one of several medicines that can reduce the intensity and frequency of headaches (including migraines) when taken on a regular basis. Stopping the medicine could cause a re-emergence of prior headaches.

Do not despair: Takes many days for the Depakote to leave your system fully, and the hair follicle toxicity will gradually resolve over next 2-3 weeks at most.  Depakote in my opinion is a very versatile and effective drug but due to adverse effects in females, is not my FIRST choice in most cases involving women.

It's complicated!: Hair loss can also be related to physical or emotional stress, or genetic factors. Any relatives with similar problems? Healthy diet can help, some say biotin supplements are beneficial. Would also rule out a physical cause such as a thyroid condition.

Yes: If you start experiencing weight gain with depakote, it is not unusual at all, but, beware, in most females, it gets worse.  Maybe, find an alternative drug depending on why you take this.  I have seen 25-30 lbs weight gain within one month, not typical, but nasty.  Talk to your doctor.

i'm on depakote and geodon (ziprasidone) and 6 other meds and i think im pregnant. should i stop them until i'm sure im not?

See your MD: We don't know why you are taking them, but as a rule you should never stop meds suddenly unless your md says so.The sudden cessation of some medications in early pregnancy may be more dangerous than taking them! don't treat yourself?!

i am on deptakote  for headaches. i have only had 2 seizures  in the past. if i stop taking  depakote  could i  have a seizure ?

That depends: If you have epilepsy, then sudden withdrawal of depakote will increase your risk for a seizure.  If you do not have epilepsy and are prescribed depakote only for headache, it would be very rare for withdrawal to cause new seizures but can cause tremor, worsened headache, and anxiety.  It should be stopped using a taper under direction of your doctor.

if i have migraine syndrome& decide to take med like topamax/depakote, will i have to be on it forever, or can it break the migraine cycle&then stop?

It depends: The fact is like a lot of other conditions, once you have it, you will always be prone to it.  This is no different.  Once a migraine sufferer, always a migraine sufferer.  some do have periods of remissions, but it is hard to predict whom and when will go into remission.  Men by nature don't suffer from migraines as much as women and when they do have them, they are not as intense or frequent.
