If no active lesion: It's okay to have sex.If your boyfriend doesn't have herpes ,you may consider taking Valtrex (valacyclovir) daily.It would make active outbreaks less likely

everytime i have sex my symptoms act up and it is painful and sore so i stop and double my valtrex (valacyclovir) then have sex and it happens again- advice?

Not herpes: Sex doesn't trigger herpes outbreaks. Something else probably is causing these symptoms, especially if you only have vaginal irritation without visible herpes blisters/sores. Taking extra Valtrex (valacyclovir) won't help. A yeast infection would be a good bet; or maybe allergy to latex if your partner is wearing a condom. See your gynecologist or whatever doctor is managing your herpes. Good luck.

HSV Prophylaxis: Valtrex is the only medication approved for Prophylaxis to prevent Herpes Simplex 1 &amp; 2 transmission. It is typically used when one partner is HSV positive and the other partner would like to prevent transmission. Talk to your Dr about your health and whether this prophylaxis would be useful in preventing Herpes Infection.

Not valtrex: Valacyclovir doesn't cause vaginal bleeding. Bleeding after sex often means a problem with the cervix, especially cervicitis. STDs can do this, so make sure you were tested for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomons (with the trich DNA test, not just the older microscopic test). HPV problems can do it too, but many cases are unexplained. Continue to work with your doctor on it. Good luck!

: Unless you have active herpes lesions sexual activity should be fine as you are also on oral preventative medication. A more pressing concern is unless the sexual partner is aware of your previous condition,  ethically and as a common sexual courtesy, he/she needs to be informed of the same before "sharing bodily fluids".

Probably not: But the only way to tell is with a pregnancy test.  If you do not wish to have babies now, then use contraception.  It is available everywhere.  Good luck.

Decreased libido: Not a major Side effect of Valtrex (valacyclovir) but it was reported in less than 1% of patients taking it.

Risk exists: You can transmit herpes via sex even if your partner is not actively shedding or has active lesions. While Valtrex (valacyclovir) can prevent outbreaks from herpes lesions, it in itself is not a cure and only a drug to suppress outbreaks. Condoms can drastically reduce but not entirely eliminate the risk of transmission.

No risk, no worry: Valacyclovir (Valtrex) is one of the safest of all drugs. Side effects are extremely rare, and taking more drug than needed is not harmful at all. In the future, just take a single dose of 2 grams at first sign of a cold sore outbreak. There is no need and no better response to more prolonged treatment.
