i am 28 and just had the rubella vaccine. is it absolutely necessary that i get a second shot next month?

Maybe, maybe not: A common misconception about mmr, or measles/mumps/rubella vaccine, is that the second dose is a booster.  I reality, that dose is not a booster. But since 10% or more of all people may not respond to the first dose, we give everyone a second dose so more people respond. So, if you prove reactions all 3 parts with a blood draw, you don't need the second dose. But if negative, you need it.

Accepted Answer

Yes: The only reason to get the vaccine again is if you were found (by blood test) to not be immune.  Since rubella infection in pregnancy can cause some severe birth defects, we usually recommend that any woman who might become pregnant be immune to rubella.

Good luck: four weeks or more should be enough for planning pregnancy after a rubella live vaccine, and you are planning preganacy after 3 more months, good luck and hope you have a nice baby

protect my unborn baby, or do i have to wait until after my pregnancy?

You : You should make an early appointment with your obstetrician to discuss this very important issue.  It is good that you are thinking of this and are concerned about it.  In general, women should wait at least one month to become pregnant after receiving live-virus vaccines. If the initial rubella test shows you are rubella non-immune, then you will be given the vaccine after delivery.

Years: Most vaccine immunity lasts for 10-20 years. They immunity wanes over time. For some this will create a susceptibilty. The body has a remembering response (anamnestic) and for many when immunity wanes and the person is exposed to the illness then the anamnestic response will lead to a healthy immune response.Others may get the illness. Susceptibility can be reduced with a healthy lifestyle.

Childhood vaccine: The MMR is collection of live weakened germs that make up one of the standard vacccines of childhood.It is generally given first at 1yo and repeated at 4-5y. It helps a child develop protection against infecion by the measles, the mumps and the rubella (german measles) virus.

Grown-ups : Grown-ups need to keep vaccinations and booster shots current -- just like kids do.  Your doctor has to bloodwork to check.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Two doses of rubella vaccine is currently recommended.  Second dose is generally to boost the protective antibody level already worn down with time.
